I never wanted to chase checks or opportunities. I just wanted a good ol’ full-time job with great benefits. I wanted to get paid a great salary that afforded a one bedroom apartment and occasional travel. I wanted a comfortable life and I fought like hell to have one. I did whatever I could to have a PR career, but as much as I loved it, the industry never seemed to love me back. I then tried my hand at email marketing and if you treat me to brunch, I’ll tell you all about that mishap. Every detour, setback and rejection broke my heart, but it all prepared me to step into my purpose. What am I suppose to do with my life? I asked myself this every birthday after I graduated from college. Sadly it’s been right in front of my face all along and I’m sure your purpose is staring back at you, too.
Purpose to me means that you are destined to do or be something. There’s no getting around it. It means that no matter what comes your way, what you are meant to do will manifest itself. We just have to be in a place to accept everything that comes with it. Actor Ashley Blaine Featherson shared similar sentiments at Summit 21 when she differentiated between purpose and passion.
“I figured out very early on that my passion was different from my purpose. I believe that my purpose is why I was sent here. It’s why God put me on this earth. It’s something that I have to do. It’s the mission that I have to fulfill…That’s what I’m purposed to do because the difference is what my purpose is, we don’t have a choice in that. A passion we have a choice in,” she shared.
Some of us are fighting our calling knowing good and well it’s in front of our face. I fought mine for a while, refusing to fully step into it until God forced me to after being laid off from my job. I now have my arms wide open fully embracing what’s next for me. As you work on finding your purpose, remember to be open and don’t fight it. What you are supposed to do might not be the plan in your head or provide the ideal lifestyle you’ve always imagined, but it is uniquely designed for you to live. I found my happiness once I surrendered and I know you will too.
