What’s With the Empowerment Events Hate?

If you are an empowerment event hater, then you aren’t attending events the right way.

I get it. It’s a lot of brunches, conferences, and mixers happening all the time. It’s the same lineup of speakers, and you want something new and different. As someone who organizes networking events, it’s not as easy as you think. Even some of the top millennial events for women experience road blocks. Sometimes you will leave feeling like you wasted your time and your money. However, there’s a science to making the most out of the events you attend.

First, understand what you are looking to gain before purchasing your ticket.  Are you looking for inspiration, great networking or learning opportunities? Some events include all three while others only focus on one thing. Understanding your “why” and whether that event aligns with your need is the first step.

Next, discover the speaker lineup, event topic(s) and attendee information. Some of us look at speaker lineups to see who is the most poppin’ person on the list, but will that speaker speak to your needs. Spending money for a photo with a speaker is different from spending money to learn from them. Check your intentions. Also, look to see if the topic/content is something that interests you. If not then it may not be worth spending money to see a speaker if the content doesn’t align with your goals.

Lastly, give that organizer feedback in what you hope to see next. People love to complain but never offer any support and suggestions. Share names of speakers who can add value, suggest content topics and ask how you can support them. What is it that they need to take this to the next level?

TIP: If great networking appeals to you. Try reaching out the organizer to see if you can get access to companies who will be attending. That way they can introduce you to the right contacts.
