This year was by far the best year that I’ve had in terms of personal growth, achievements and life milestones. Here are some of my favorite personal memories along with some pop culture moments of 2015 captured in pictures:
ESSENCE
This year I had my first byline in this nationally distributed magazine. It was experience I will never forget and one I will cherish. With this opportunity, I was able to grow with my writing, enhance my skills in content creation, and interview and work with some amazing Black women.
TRAVEL
I didn’t do any international travel this year, but I did explore two of my favorite cities. Los Angeles has been on my list of cities to visit for quite some time. Many people have told me that I have a Cali vibe, but I never knew what they meant by that until now. I loved everything about it! The weather, the people and the variety of things to do. Thank goodness for friends with couches! They make my weekend getaways affordable and they always know what places I would appreciate in their city. My friends hosted my stay and showed me a good time. Now I can check these places off of my list and work on my international travel goals in 2016.
FRIENDSHIP
Friendship has always been a revolving door for me. People come and go, but then there are a few people who were meant to be around for a lifetime. The people who are still around kept me laughing, kept me sane and kept me accountable this year. I don’t know what I’d do without them.
WORK PALS
I always wanted work friends. I always wanted to build an authentic relationship with the people I spend most of my day with, but it always seemed like a difficult thing to do. For the first time, I feel supported in all aspects of my life from the three people that make up the marketing department. They make me excited about 9 a.m. on Mondays and I appreciate it.
LAUNCHED MY WEBSITE
Launching this site was an incredible moment for me. After realizing that I have to take the reigns of my career and my dreams, I put into motion a plan to rebrand myself, create my own content and monetize my own expertise. So far the support I’ve receive has been beyond my expectations. Everyday I see little victories that get me closer to what I envision for my personal brand and the “lemons 2 lemonade” brand.
THE CURRY FAMILY
This year we all got to know the Curry family a little better as they each showcased their talents and wonderful personalities to the world. Stephen took his basketball skills to new heights and became an MVP and Champion in one season. His wife, Ayesha grew her social media following and added more delicious videos to her cooking vlog. She also just announced a new cook book which I can’t wait to try! Let’s not forget Riley who became a big sister this year. She made the most of her dad’s post-game interviews which inevitably had us wanting more adorable moments with the 3-year-old.
BLACK WOMEN SLAYAGE ON MAGAZINE COVERS
Black women ruled the magazine cover in 2015! Every month we celebrated diversity as the magazine industry displayed some of our favorite stars on their covers. September was monumental for covers full of melanin. The industry’s most coveted issue featured at least 6 black women on their covers. Once upon a time publishers claimed that black women couldn’t sell covers, but this year we demystified that myth. Here is a look back at this year’s brilliant black girl magically covers.
PRESIDENT OBAMA & FIRST LADY OBAMA
I don’t know about you, but I am going to miss seeing this extraordinary couple have moments like this. Let’s hope for many more in his last year as POTUS.
“FEELING MYSELF” LIVE PERFORMANCE
This was the only moment I wanted to see during the lifestream of Tidal 10×20 concert. I really don’t need to breakdown why this moment was great. Click here to watch the video.
BREE NEWSOME
Bree Newsome had enough. Just like the rest of us, but she actually did something about it. A few days after the Charleston church massacre, a conversation began about removing the confederate flag from the South Carolina state building. She bravely climbed the flag pole and removed the wretched flag from in front of the building. It was later put back up that very day, but this moment intensified the conversation about the flag which was later voted to be removed. Go Bree!
DRAKE HAD THE BEST YEAR EVER!
- He topped the charts
- He gave us beard hotness and great arms
- He shut down his opponents and haters
- He gave us awkward dance moves
- He had a brief romance with this year’s best athlete, Serena Williams
- He gave us meme-able moments all year
- He is Aubrey and he had the best year ever!
Thank you all for rocking with me in 2015! I look forward to what’s in store in the New Year and I hope you stick around for the next chapter.
